Here’s a short summary of episode 2 to wet your beak:
In this episode of The Path Less Traveled, Syd Connolly sits down with Justin Cohen, her former colleague in big tech who unexpectedly found himself pushed off the traditional path. Together, they dive into Justin's journey of embracing vulnerability, stepping into the unknown, and the unexpected benefits of taking risks—despite being self-proclaimed risk-averse.
After being laid off from his job, Justin found new opportunities he never imagined—launching his own consulting business, building a new community in Denver, and learning to play pickleball. Through it all, Justin reflects on how the traditional career path can feel safe but also limiting, and how embracing uncertainty can lead to personal growth and unexpected rewards.
Syd and Justin also explore the importance of mental health, discussing how taking time for self-care, seeking support, and confronting fears can be integral in navigating life’s uncertainties. This episode is full of raw, honest reflections about fear, self-doubt, and the courage it takes to carve your own path, no matter how unconventional.
If you're grappling with the tension of following a "safe" path versus taking a leap into the unknown, this conversation will inspire you to step into your own adventure.
Justin generously invites you to reach out if you’d like to chat about anything he shared in the episode, or if you’re curious about his work, at justin@jcoconsultingllc.com. You can also check out his website, jcoconsultingllc.com.
On mental health support
We chat quite a bit about the importance of seeking mental health support, but I regretfully never followed up to discuss, “where does one even start with seeking mental health support?”
The answer is geography-dependent, but below are a few ideas for first steps:
talk to a trusted person: reach out to a friend, family member, or mentor to share what you're feeling. A conversation with someone you trust can be a great pathway to further support.
reach out to a healthcare provider: talk to a primary care physician who can provide referrals for a mental health specialist.
visit a therapist directory or app: explore platforms like Psychology Today, BetterHelp, or Talkspace, which offer searchable directories of licensed therapists or access to online therapy.
hotlines and crisis support: for immediate mental health support, call a crisis hotline (e.g. the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 1-800-273-TALK in the U.S.). A quick Google search will likely reveal comparable options in other countries if they exist.
As always, thank you for being a beautiful part of my sunshiney squad. Sharing with you makes me really happy.
Big hug and have a lovely, joyful weekend <3
Love,
Syd
